WHAT IS TAXIDERMY?
Most people are unfamiliar with this unique and special art
form. Some associate it only with stuffed animals seen in museums, in
dusty attics, or in old scary movies. Actually, taxidermy is an art, the
practice of preparing lifelike representations of animals from their natural
skins. In taxidermy, many different methods are used in completing the
finished work. Taxidermists must be skilled in a thorough knowledge of the
animal's anatomy, in the building of forms, skinning, painting and much more.
A taxidermist is an artist who works in a three-dimensional world creating
specimens as close to the actual living animal as possible.
WHY A PENNSYLVANIA TAXIDERMIST
ASSOCIATION?
Back in 1979, Bill and Karen Allen and a small group of
concerned taxidermists founded the Pennsylvania Taxidermist Association, Inc.
(PTA). They were concerned about the influx of many unskilled and
unregulated people getting into the business, and no real direction for the art
of taxidermy. In the months ahead, other taxidermists joined their efforts
and eventually a purpose for the PTA was established.
* to promote the high standards in the art of
taxidermy.
* educate the general public about the field of
taxidermy and conservation, so as to propagate the sport of hunting and fishing.
* advise and assist its members on federal and state
legislation or proposed legislation relating to the profession.
And so, a new state organization was begun. Today over 400 licensed taxidermists from across the state and country take part in PTA activities and competitions, and benefit from being a part of this strong organization.
